North American Aerospace Defense Command

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a combined United States and Canadian organization which performs air sovereignty, maritime warning, and aerospace warning functions. The mission of the North American Aerospace Defence Command is to protect the airspace of North America against unwanted air activity. Its headquarters are located at Peterson Air Force Base in El Paso County, Colorado. The NORAD/USNORTHCOM command center is located at Cheyenne Mountain in Wyoming.

As of July 1, 2018, the Aerospace Defense Command is no longer active. However, its organizations are still under the CINCNORAD designation. The main function of CINCNORAD is to alert the national command authorities to a possible aerospace attack on North America. In addition, CINCNORAD is responsible for tracking Santa Claus. The Christmas Eve event has been a tradition, and a member of the New York Air Guard will join in the effort to track the man in red on Christmas Eve.
